Tenerife dolphins - Tenerife whales

Tenerife Whale and Dolphin excursions leave every day from various ports in the South of Tenerife giving visitors a chance to enjoy this magical and unforgettable experience. Bottlenose Dolphins and Pilot Whales are the most numerous and live permanently in these waters but it’s also possible to sight Sperm Whales, White Whales, Blue Whales, Fin Whales, Right Whales, Minke Whales and the extremely rare Blainvilles Toothed Whale.  Dolphin species that can be encountered include Striped Dolphins, Spotted Dolphins, Risso's Dolphin, Rough Toothed Dolphins. All excursions are carefully controlled to preserve the welfare and safety of these magnificent creatures.

The most common species encountered on an almost guaranteed daily basis are the Bottlenose Dolphin and the Long Finned Pilot Whale. The dolphins, with their grinning faces and playful antics, thrill passengers as they ride the bow waves of the boats almost close enough to touch. The Pilot whales seem far more sedate and almost stationary in comparison, they live in large ‘pods’ and can extend over several miles of the ocean, they keep in contact with each other via an extensive and complicated sonar communication system that is made up of whistles, clicks and high pitched squeaks.

As well as the Bottlenose Dolphins living in the area visitors are often treated to incredible aerial displays by the regularly seen groups of Spotted Dolphins. Compared to the Bottlenose Dolphin, these smaller ones move with tremendous speed and are capable of providing onlookers with an impressive display, leaping a couple of metres out of the water. These dolphins provide passengers of the boats the opportunity to take home some fantastic holiday snaps or video footage. The Common Dolphins, with a lateral yellow marking on each flank will also perform aerial acrobatics in much the same way.

With around thirty different species of Whale and Dolphins to be found in the waters around the Canary Islands, Tenerife is without a shadow of doubt one of the best locations in the world to go Whale or Dolphin watching. All of this can be enjoyed in Tenerife’s wonderful climate.
